History of Arena Chapter No. 29, O.E.S., P.H.A.
We thank GOD for Arena's History! Arena Chapter No. 29 the oldest Chapter in Atlanta, Georgia. One hundred and twenty-seven years ago, a group of distinguished, dedicated and inspired women met on Ivey Street in a small building located between Auburn Avenue and Edgewood Avenue to organize Arena Chapter No. 29, Order of the Eastern Star, and become “Stars”. It was organized on December 14, 1900, under the Jurisdiction of the Grand Chapter of Georgia by Grand Patron, Brother W. E. Terry of Columbus, Georgia. We thank GOD for the founders and pioneers of our Chapter. These pioneers had a dream and through hard work and strong determination, their dream came to fruition. They were the Trailblazers of “Sisterhood”. They paved the way for us. Our charter members were: Sisters Helen E. Mangham, Worthy Matron; Lillie B. Smith, Associate Matron; Ada Dowdell, Conductress; Charlotte Shorter, Associate Conductress; Melvina Hawkins, Secretary; Lucille Porter, Treasure; Roxie Farmer, Adah; Irene Hobbs, Ruth; Della Brown, Esther; Annie B. Matthews, Martha; Lillie E. Grier, Electa; Mamie Reed, Warder; Mary A. Head, Sentinel; Lucille Woods, Janie Jones, Ruby Johnson, Estella Lucas, Margaret Echols, Estella Brown, Lucille Eutsey, Selene Butler, Mary Williams, Nellie Thompson, Jessie Mae and Brother William Griffin, Worthy Patron.
Other members joining between the years 1927 – 1949 were: Sister Jane Wright, Janie Wilkinson, Susie Hunter, Bertha Carroll, Lila Cox, Elizabeth Calhoun, Pearl Carr, Nellie Thompson, Rosa Glass, Betty Irwin, Fannie Printup, Hattie Allen, Odie B. Johnson, Cornelia Johnson, Rosa Clark, Armo Woods and Hilda Lyman.
We thank God for all who have served our Chapter! Arena Chapter No. 29 has fifty (50) Past Matrons and thirty one (31) Past Patrons. PAST MATRONS

PM Helen E. Mangham – First joined in 1900, served from 1900 – 1910 with a firm foundation and
determination. Our first leader.

PM Lillie B. Smith – Second, joined in 1900, served from 1911 – 1915 with distinguish and hard work.

PM Ada M. Dowdell – Third, joined in 1900, served from 1916 – 1919 with inspiration and faithfulness
to move the Chapter forward.

PM Charlotte Shorter – Fourth, joined in 1900, served from 1920 – 1925 with loyalty and great
inspiration.

PM Mamie Reed – Fifth, joined in 1900 served 1926–1939 with eagerness and strong dedication to
serve.

PM Jane Wright – Joined in 1936, served from 1940 – 1948. Her legacy was strong, with a firm
foundation that we have all built upon.

PM Pearl Carr – Joined in 1945, served from 1949 – 1953 with love and eagerness.

PM Tyree J. Walters – Joined in 1951, served 1957 – 1962 and 1970 with dedication, love and excellent
ritualistic advice. She served as Treasurer from 1963 – 1969. Past Matron Walters has served in several
Grand Chapter positions. A youth group has been named Tyree J. Walters Youth Group. Past Grand
Worthy Matron, Sister Vashti G. Pullen named her Grand Ways and Means, Chairman, Emeritus, in
2003, and at the 2004 Grand Session, she was renamed the Grand Ways and Means Committee the Tyree
J. Walters Grand Ways and Means Committee. She is Past Grand Marshal in the East, Past Grand Adah
and Past Grand Historian. She passes on from year to year the light of her wisdom and knowledge.

PM Mae Pearl Elder – Joined in 1949, served 1963 – 1965 with love and faithfulness.

PM Hilda C. Lyman – Joined in 1949, served 1966 – 1967 with sincerity and dedication. She served as
Secretary and then as Treasurer for a number of years.

PM Odie B. Johnson – Joined in 1949, served 1968 – 1969 with love, faithfulness, devotion and strong
dedication.

PM Dorothy Johnson – Joined in 1967, served 1970 – 1971 with eagerness.

PM Esteen Allen – Joined in 1967, served 1972 with faithfulness and willingness to assist with any task.

PM Allen served as Grand Credential person for several years and was a Past District Matron of Atlanta
District No. 3.

PM Estella Jackson – Joined in 1970, served 1973 with love and peace.

PM Christine Jordan – Joined in 1964, served 1974 – 1975 with love and dedication, and with a vision
for growth. She was instrumental in bringing in several members during her reign. She purchased two
(2) Past Matron pins. A Scholarship Fund has been named in her honor. Doing her administration she
built our Chapter back up.

PM Ruth Stevenson - Joined in 1969, served 1976 – 1977 with great emphasis on ritualistic work. She
instated the burial team in the chapter, she served as Secretary for over twenty (20) year, leaving office at
the end of 1996. PM Stevenson is the Grand C.C.F.C. for the Jurisdiction of Georgia and served as the
Secretary for Atlanta District No. 3 O.E.S., for twenty five (25) years (1977 – 2002). In 2004, the newly
elected District Matron, Sister Barbara J. Lewis, PM named the Atlanta District Book Scholarship in her
honor. She is Atlanta District No. 3, O.E.S., advisor. She passes on from year to year the light of her
wisdom and knowledge. She is ritualistic knowledgeable.

PM Irene Humphrey – Joined in 1973, served 1980 – 1981 with harmony and togetherness. Her motto
was “Keep in touch with a Sister”. She serves as Assistant Secretary 1982 – 1983 and Treasurer 1984 –
1993. She served for many years on the Grand Ways and Means Committee.

PM Bernice Norwood – Joined in 1973, served 1980 – 1981 with harmony and togetherness. Her motto
was “Keep in touch with a Sister”. She serves as Assistant Secretary 1982 – 1983 and Treasurer 1984 –
1993. She served for many years on the Grand Ways and Means Committee.

PM Rachel Batten – Joined in 1963, served 1982 with loyalty and inspiration.

PM Bessie Strong – Joined in 1962, served 1983 – 1984 with peace, devotion and motivation. She
initiated the first bus trip to Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina as a fundraiser. She served us
well and kept the Chapter moving ritualistic.

PM Mary McLurkin – Joined in 1977, served 1985 with harmony, loyalty and great determination to get
the task done. She is a faithful member and always willing to help out where needed. She truly loves the
Order.

PM Mollie Scott- Joined in 1980, served 1986 – 1987 with loyalty, faithfulness and determination. The
Queen of the South and The Amaranth degrees were given during her administration. PM Scott is a Past
District Matron and a Past Grand Secretary, having served from 1997 – 2000. She was the only member
of our chapter ever to be elected at the Grand Chapter O.E.S. Level, as Grand Secretary. She demitted to
Arena Chapter No. 29, in 1980. She demitted from Bright Hope Chapter No. 46, O.E.S. P.H.A.; White
Plains, New York. We were honored, because during her administration she initiated “The Five Point
Tea” in our Chapter and other Chapters in the Jurisdiction of Georgia took on this project by having Five
Point Teas. She also worked in the Masonic Relief Association under Brother Charles Ferguson for three
(3) years.

PM Catherine Truitt – Joined in 1979, served 1988 – 1989 with dedication, loyalty and a vision for
growth of the Chapter. PM Truitt served as Secretary of Arena Chapter. In 1993, under the leadership of
Past Grand Worthy Matron, Sister Ruby C. Clayton, PM Truitt was appointed Youth Director for Atlanta.

PM Catherine Truitt established and named the Tyree J. Walters Youth Group No. 151. The Youth
Group was named after Sister Tyree J. Walters, PM; the oldest member of Arena Chapter No. 29. In
2004 PM Truitt was name Youth Director Emeritus by then WM Valerie Hindsman. She has served on
various Grand By-Laws Committees and as the Grand Assistant Youth Director.

PM Susan Haynes – Joined in 1981, served 1990 – 1991 with inspiration. She served as Secretary from
1997 to 1998. PM Haynes is a Past District Matron. She has always served to instruct her Sisters with
great dedication for strong ritualistic work. PM Haynes served as Secretary of Arena Chapter from 2003
– 2003. In 2003, she was appointed to serve as Grand Lecturer Area 1 by our Past Grand Worthy Matron
Vashti G. Pullen.

PM Barbara J. Lewis – Joined in 1982, served from 1992 – 1993 with dedication and love. She did an
excellent job. She served as Treasurer from 1994 to 1998. In 2004, she was elected Atlanta Masonic
District No. 3 O.E.S. District Matron. PM Lewis has served on the Grand Chapter level as Grand
Marshal and on the Grand Ways and Means Committee. A true Star who carries a light within her heart
that burns with a steady flame to promote and good fellowship and love. PM Barbara Lewis is very
dependable.

PM Marilyn Hixon – Joined in 1983, served from 1994 – 1995 with peace and love. More members
were initiated during her administration than ever recorded in our history at the time. Grand Chapter
O.E.S. presented her with a plaque of appreciation in 1995. She carried our Chapter to higher heights.

PM Betty Green – Joined in 1986, served 1996 with enthusiasm, dedication and a clear vision for growth
and progress. She founded the Christine Jordan Scholarship and implemented a fundraiser project to
finance the purchase of new regalia for the Chapter. She re-instated the School of Instruction within our
Chapter. She initiated twenty-eight (28) new members during their administration and four (4) of those
members have served as Worthy Matrons of the chapter. PM Green served as Secretary from 1999 –
2001.

PM Dorothy Robinson – Joined in 1984, served 1997 with eagerness and dedication. Regalia for the
Chapter were purchased under her administration. She took the Community Outreach Program to a new
level. She awarded the First Christine Jordan Scholarship. She served as Treasurer from 1999 = 2003.
PM Robinson has served on the Grand Chapter Scrapbook Committee.

PM Arleathia Jones – Joined in 1987, served 1998 with enthusiasm. She aggressively raised money for
the Christine Jordan Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was presented in January 1999. Under her
administration, we had the first District Queen, Sister Valerie Hindsman, who came in 6 th place at the
Centennial Grand Session. At our 98 th Anniversary, she honored our five living Life Members, also
honored Past Matron Sister Tyree J. Walters as our Most Valuable Member.

PM Marva T. Clark – Joined 1991, served 1999 with great enthusiasm. In January of 1999, she
presented $500.00 to the Christine Jordan Fund. She enhanced the Outreach Program and expanded our
circle of friendship. She worked to move the Chapter to a new level. PM Clark was elected to serve as
Treasurer in 2004.

PM Malissa Williams – Joined in 1994, served 2000 to be our first Worthy Matron of Twenty First
Century. She served with dedication, eagerness and loyalty. In her quiet way, she is a person who is
always lending a hand to help our Order to its greatest. “A Very Loyal Star” PM Williams serves on the
Grand By-Laws Committee. During her administration twelve (12) new members were initiated. Under
her administration Sister Dorothy Brannon came in First Place at the District Meeting in Carrollton,
Georgia. At the Grand Session, Sister Dorothy Brannon placed Second in the Grand Queen Contest.

PM Patricia V. Smith – Joined in 1996, served 2001 to be our second Worthy Matron of the Twenty
First Century. She served with great enthusiasm, dedication, diligence, loyalty and faithfulness. With
inspiration and devotion, she had a vision in implementing her program for strong ritualistic work,
progress and growth of the chapter. She initiated twenty one (21) new members under her administration.
Her theme was “Sisters and Brothers United in Love and Service”. She has served as Atlanta District No.
3 O.E.S. Secretary and on the Grand C.C.F.C. Committee.
PM Barbara Caldwell – Joined in 1995, served in 2002. She is our third Worthy Matron of the Twenty
First Century. She served with great inspiration and dedication. She took the Outreach Program to higher
heights. She implemented her program strongly in getting back to the basic in the ritualistic work. Our
friendship and togetherness enhanced under her administration. She initiated twenty (20) new members.
Her famous quote is “Don’t ask, has the Chapter been a friend to me? But ask, Have I to the Chapter been
true?” PM Caldwell served as the chapter’s Secretary in 2004 and served as the star point of Esther for
Atlanta District No. 3 O.E.S. Her theme was: “Sisters and Brothers Reclaiming Our Heritage –
Refocusing Our Vision”.

PM Rhonda Neal Westbrook – Joined in 1996, served 2003. She served with great determination,
diligence, compassion, loyalty, loving kindness and understanding. Her goal was to ensure the Chapter’s
success and continue to build upon the foundation that was established by the trailblazers. She
established the chapter’s first website. The Outreach Program was extended by adopting a school and
providing school supplies, visiting the chapter elderly members and much more. She initiated fifteen (15)
new members. Her theme was “Sisters and Brothers Continuing the Legacy Through Love and Service”.
PM Neal presented the chapter with their first Arena’s Chapter No. 29 O.E.S. banner. She served as the
chapter’s Treasurer 2005 – 2007. She served as Atlanta District No. 3 Associate Matron and Director of
Grand Chapter Security Team under the leadership of Grand Worthy Matron Marilyn Moore.

PM Valerie Hindsman Bell – Joined in 1996, served 2004. She did a fantastic job. Her strong
leadership organizational and time management skills were demonstrated at every meeting. She serves
with great determination and diligence. Her goal was also to continue to build upon the foundation of
progress that others have laid before. During her administration, Arena won both the District Queen
Contest and the Grand Queen Contest. She initiated twenty eight (28) new members. Her theme was:
“Releasing the Past and Embarking Upon the Future”.

PM Shirley Cunningham – Joined in 1997, served 2005. She served with great eagerness, motivation,
loving kindness and faithfulness to lead our chapter to higher heights. She has taken our Outreach
Program to exceedingly higher heights. She walks the walk with great enthusiasm. When you cannot
catch her at home, she is busy as a bee at a walk (walks for the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer,
Diabetes, etc.). Her theme was: “Sisters and Brothers Serving in Faith and Love”.

PM Darylene Rood Allen – Joined in 1992, served 2006. She served with great enthusiasm, loyalty and
spiritual motivation to carry our Chapter onto higher heights. It was a first in the history of Prince Hall
Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Jurisdiction of Georgia and for her as a Sister, to deliver the
sermon at the 108 th Grand Session, Chapter of Sorrow, and the members of Arena Chapter No. 29 are
proud. Worthy Matron Allen was also appointed by Past Grand Matron Vashti G. Pullen as Grand
Assistant Chaplin. Her theme was Sisters and Brothers Following the Star, Ever Shining for Him”.

PM Sharon A. Lane – Joined in 1996, served 2007. She served with strong principles, true devotion,
dedication, faithfulness and with the Chapter’s best interest first and foremost. Her goal was to re-
establish a website for the Chapter and this was completed. She stressed the importance of Sisterhood
and sought to strengthen the unity of the Chapter in continuing to build upon the foundation of progress
that others had laid before. During her administration, the chapter won the District Queen Contest and the
Platinum Award in the Grand Queen Contest. She strongly believes in the ritualistic work of the chapter
and has assisted other chapters. She was appointed by Past Grand Matron Vashti G. Pullen=at the 109 th
Annual Grand Session to the Grand Real Estate Committee. Her theme was: “Walking by Faith in a
Spirit of Unity.”

PM Sherri A. Davis – Joined in 2001, served 2008 with loyalty, faithfulness, dedication and a clear
vision for growth in progress. Also she has a vision in implementing her program for strong ritualistic
work and charitable contributions. Worthy Matron Davis stated that it is with a humble heart that I
extend my gratitude and thanks to each of you for electing me to serve as the 2008 Worthy Matron of this
great chapter. She promises to serve with meekness of heart, loyalty and fidelity. She also stated, it is by
working together in a spirit of love and unity that we will succeed both individually and as a Chapter.
She has initiated (10) new members. Her theme was: “Sisters and Brothers United in Love, Harmony,
Peace and Faith”.

PM Gwendolyn Williams – Joined 1996, served 2009 with dedication, loyalty, devotion and a great
determination to get the task done. She stated that the year is 2009, let us make it a year of “Greatest”, let
us strive to spread love in as many places as we can. AS “Stars” we can let our light shine, in Nursing
Homes, as we feed the homeless and various other community outreach projects. It is her prayer that the
Chapter will grow closer through our efforts to God, our communities and lastly to each other with
“Love”. Her theme was: “Sisters and Brothers Strengthen in Love, Peace and Harmony”.

PM Crystal Lockhart – Joined 2002, served 2010 and 2011. She is our eleventh (11) Worthy Matron of
the Twenty First Century. She served with great enthusiasm, loyalty, devotion, compassion and great
determination to carry our Chapter to higher heights. AS far as we know in our history, she is the
youngest Sister of Arena Chapter No. 29, O.E.S. to hold this office as Worthy Matron. She implemented
her program strongly in getting back to the basic in the ritualistic work for the growth of the Chapter.
She is continued the Outreach Program and Youth Chapter to higher heights. After the death of Sister
Geraldine McKinney, Past Grand Associate Matron, Sister Lockhart took on another role as Worthy
Matron on the Burial Team along with Past Grand Worthy Patron, Brother Aaron Kent when we had to
go and do the ceremony for different Chapters, (Sisters) in the Jurisdiction of Georgia. She initiated
eleven (11) new members. She truly believed in working together in Unity. Her theme was: “Embracing
New Beginnings Together in Charity and Love”.

PM Chandra Hill – Joined 2002, served 2012 with eagerness and harmony. Her theme: “Continuing to
Embrace Our Heritage in a spirit of Love, Unity and Service.” Her scripture: The fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is
no law. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23, 25. Brother Tillman
Bonner 32 ° was the Worthy Patron.

PM Andrea Sasnett – Joined 2003, served 2013 with loyalty, togetherness, inspiration and great
determination to get the task done. Her theme: “Walking Together in the Light of Love, Faith and
Knowledge”. God has added a special blessing to us for this year through His scriptural word. “Be kind
and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32.
During her administration, Arena Chapter No. 29 won the District Queens Contest and represented the
Atlanta Masonic District No. 3 West in the Grand Queens Contest. Under her leadership, 7 sisters were
initiated into our chapter. Brother Curtis Jenkins, 32° was the Worthy Patron. Worthy Matron Sasnett
also served as acting Worthy Matron for the last six months in 2012 due to the illness of PM Chandra
Hill.

PM Eleanor P. Gantt – Joined in 2006. Is serving with commitment, strength, dedication and
perseverance. Her theme, “Renewing Our Commitment to Service”. Her scripture, Psalm 51:10, “Create
in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me.” Her vision has been to increase the depth
of service through meaningful outreach projects, strengthen the bonds of sisterhood, bolster ritualistic
knowledge and practice the principles of the Order. Under her leadership, the Bernice Norwood Burial
Team was officially formed, in honor of our beloved Past Matron; two sisters were initiated into other
chapters; a reduction in due was implemented for our brothers and one brother, PP George Daily was
exempted from dues; three Grand Chapter scholarships and three (3) chapter scholarships were awarded
to deserving college students. Brother Curtis Jenkins served as Worthy Patron.

PM Dorcas L. Ford Jones – Joined in 2007. Served as the 46 th Worthy Matron, 15 th of Twenty First
Century in 2015 with eagerness, inspiration, commitment, and loyalty. Her theme, “Moving Forward in
Sisterhood with Faith and Truth, Living the Dream.” Her scripture, Isaiah 25:1 – ‘O Lord, thou art my
God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou has done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are
faithfulness and truth.’ She truly believed in working together in Unity. PM Ford Jones continued great
work with th””e Tyree J. Walters Youth Chapter. One Grand Chapter scholarship and one chapter
scholarship were awarded to college students. Under her leadership, one sister was initiated, and three
brothers were obligated. She ensured that the legacy of our Life Members/Past Matrons continued as she
gave to LM/PM Catherine Truitt and LM/PM Mollie Scott their “life member stoles”. She promised to
serve with meekness of heart. Brother Julius Lott served as Worthy Patron.

PM Frieda E. Aden – Joined in 2008. Served as Arena Chapter’s 47 th Worthy Matron in 2016. With a
desire to uphold her position with dignity and authority, her heart overflowed with emotions of love and
charity for her Chapter and its members. Her theme was “Walking in Faith, Dressed in Favor and
Giving God the Glory ~ Sister Under Divine Order”. Scripture reference to Romans 5:1-2 which reads,
“Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand,
and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory”. NLT. PM Aden was excited about
the potential of future growth in Arena. She encouraged fellowship between the chapter and our brother
lodge, and ritualistic training by passing our monthly study material and quizzes. Each month, PM Aden
chose a different virtue or attribute to help uplift character in the sisterhood. Under her leadership, Arena
partnered with Plymouth Rock Lodge No. 86 and Ruth Court No. 11, HOJ on joint community service
projects and the annual cookout. One sister was initiated, two brothers were obligated, and the Chapter
continued support to the Tyree J. Walters Youth Chapter. Due to the untimely death of WP Julius Lott,
Associate Patron Tillman Bonner, PP served the remaining of the year. She also assigned each officer
and star point a Past Matron mentor for the year. PM Aden also served as District Adah for two years
and currently sits as the District Chair of Trustees and Secretary for District 3 West Past Matron’s
Council.

PM Priscilla Hurston -Joined in 1991. Served as Arena Chapter’s 48 th Worthy Matron in 2017. Her
theme was, “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one
mind”. During the Grand Youth Session, Arena Chapter had three youth to attend and two adults. One
of our youth of the Tyree J. Walters Youth Chapter was crowned King, Elijah Hopkins. Nine new sisters
were initiated, two sisters demitted to Arena Chapter and one brother obligated. PM Hurston admits that,
“there was a lot of things that was accomplished and a lot of things that I wanted to do but did not get to
do but I loved every minute of being the 2017 Worthy Matron.”

PM Elaine Williams – Joined in 2004. Served as Arena Chapter’s 50 th Worthy Matron 2019-2020. She
served the chapter in various positions and learned the lessons being taught which ultimately led her to
serve as Worthy Matron. Her theme was: “Being the Change we want to see through Unity and Love.”
And her scripture was: “Behold how Good and how Pleasant it is for Brethren to Dwell together in
Unity.” Psalm 133:1. Under her leadership Arena Chapter No. 29 has worked diligently throughout the
year to be the change in our chapter that we would like to see through Unity and Love. The Tyree J.
Walters Youth Chapter grew to 19 members under her leadership. Also, under her leadership we
celebrated our “2019 Grand Pearls” (our members who are over 80 years old.

PM Almelida R. Baker - Joined in 2013. She has served as Arena Chapter’s 51 st Worthy Matron 2021.
She served during the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) where virtual “Zoom” meetings and masks
were the mandated protocols. Her theme was “Be Patient…Wait…Come In.” And her scriptures were:
Exodus 14:1, Isaiah 40:31, and Matthew 11:28-30. Under her leadership Arena Chapter No. 29 kept the
pace continuing community service and volunteering with: Spring Spruce at PM/LM Ruth Stevenson’s
Home; A.G. Rhodes Donations; Voter Registration with NAACP; Arena in Need Donations; Bald Nation
Rocks Prayer Calls & Fundraisers; Community Fire Safety Education; Hartsfield Jackson USO; and
Annual Thanksgiving Baskets. WM Baker has served as District Adah for the AMD3W Initiation team
and as a member of the Grand Chapter Chaplain’s team. Seven new sisters were initiated into Arena

Mission: To promote unity among Sisters by providing positive and professional service to the community and to one another, while continuously striving to serve and emulate our heroic heroines through faith, hope, charity, and love. These themes and this mission became the foundation for my administration. In 2024, we embraced a new beginning rooted in togetherness, renewed purpose, and a shared commitment to the work before us. In 2025, we continued that journey by finding strength in unity through love, reminding ourselves that when we serve together, support one another, and move with compassion, our chapter becomes stronger and our impact becomes greater.
